AfterElite Welding & Fabrication: The Arcadia Owner’s Guide
If your Elite gate has a cracked weld, a sagging frame, or a mounting bracket that’s torn loose, we stock the steel and hardware to fix it, usually for a total installed price of $180-$520 depending on the thickness of the material and where the break is. We keep Elite-grade channel stock, hinge plates, and reinforcement bar on the truck, so most Arcadia welding jobs are done in one visit. Owners usually find the problem the same way you just did: the gate starts dragging, or a hinge squeals, or there’s a hairline crack in a weld that wasn’t there last year.
We’re an independent shop. We’re not affiliated with Elite, but we work on their gates constantly, and we’ve learned where their frames and brackets tend to fail first. In Arcadia’s dry heat, steel expands and contracts daily, and welds that were marginal from the factory give way at the worst possible spot. You don’t have to guess what’s wrong. Which Elite Models This Applies To
Elite residential and light commercial swing and slide gates share a lot of the same structural DNA, and this page covers the common denominators: the Elite SL-3000 and SL-5000 slide operators, the Elite Mirage and StrongArm swing arms, and the steel or wrought-iron gate panels they move. The welding points that fail on an Elite are almost always at the manufacturer’s original joints: hinge welds on swing gates, the bottom track plate on slide gates, and the operator mounting tabs, which pull free of the gate frame when the opener tries to move a warped panel.
The compatibility detail that matters is the gauge of the existing steel. Elite’s slide-gate frames are commonly 14-gauge rectangular tube on the perimeter and 16-gauge internal pickets. If you weld 11-gauge plate onto 16-gauge pickets without backing the joint, you’ll tear the picket before you fix the gate. We match the filler rod and the plate thickness to the parent metal, not to whatever is easiest to cut. For OEM parts, Elite offers replacement hinge weldments and slide-gate truck plates with pre-drilled holes; quality aftermarket equivalents exist for common sizes, but we’ll tell you when OEM is the better call, usually when the part carries the gate’s full weight or a safety-edge channel.
Identification is straightforward. Look at the flat face of a factory hinge plate; Elite laser-cuts their logo and part number about half the time. The other half, you’re measuring bolt centers. We’ll come out and do that for you, photograph what’s there, and quote from what we saw, not what we think might be there.
Signs Your Elite Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- Gate drags at the latch end or catches at mid-swing. The steel frame has settled or a hinge weld has cracked, throwing the gate out of plane. The opener is now lifting the gate instead of swinging it, and the motor is working against gravity it was never designed to fight.
- Hinge squeal that gets sharper each week. The weld bead around the hinge barrel has started to separate. Grease quiets it for a day, but separation doesn’t self-heal; it propagates along the original heat-affected zone.
- Operator mounting bolts tore out of the gate frame. This is the classic Elite swing-gate failure in Arcadia. The operator arm pulls against the frame every cycle, and if the gate is slightly warped, that pull becomes a pry. A crack opens around the bolt holes and the motor starts rattling against torn metal.
- Visible hairline cracks at sharp corners or weld ends. The crack starts where the weld ended, at the edge of the plate, exactly where the heat stress concentrated during manufacturing. Once it’s visible as a shadow line, the cross-section left is often half what it should be.
- Slide gate jumps the track or grinds going into the receiver. The rear truck plate and the bottom guide rail carry tremendous side-load when the gate’s momentum shifts. A failing weld there lets the gate wander, and the wheels start eating the track edge.

DIY or Call Us?
Welding is not a task to pick up from a YouTube video, and I’ll be plain about the risk. A gate panel weighs hundreds of pounds, often under spring or operator tension, and a bad weld can fail without warning while someone is under it or pushing through it. High-tension springs, if your Elite uses one, store enough energy to break a hand or an arm if released wrong. This is the one trade where an almost-correct fix is often worse than no fix, because the metal now looks sound and will tear under load in a place nobody expected.
What you can safely do without us: photograph the crack with a coin for scale, check whether the gate is binding on a hinge or dragging at a single wheel, and tap the metal with a wrench to hear whether the crack echoes like dead metal. What you shouldn’t do: grind, weld, or try to ratchet-strap a cracked frame back into place and call that a fix. A properly ground and re-welded joint on an Elite gate in Arcadia’s climate typically lasts as long as the original surrounding metal, often 10 to 15 years, because the repair eliminates the original factory heat-stress zone and reinstates a full cross-section. The variable is whether the gate is carrying extra load from a misaligned hinge or a warped frame; that’s why we check the plane of the gate before we weld anything. If the gate is still racking, we’ll tell you and we won’t weld over the symptom.
A cracked hinge barrel can sometimes be welded and re-bored, but replacement is the better call whenever the barrel itself is wallowed, bent, or worn past round. If the weld holding the hinge plate to the gate failed but the hinge swings freely, we grind and re-weld it in place. We’ll show you photos of the inside of the hinge before you decide, because that’s the part that tells the truth about whether it’s salvageable.
Most single-joint weld repairs on an Elite gate take 90 minutes to two hours from first grind to final paint flash, including the cool-down and the proof-load test. Multiple cracks or slide-gate truck plates can run three to four hours. We’ll give you the time window in the written quote, and we don’t rush the cool-down, because welding on steel that’s still hot from the prior pass is how new cracks get built into a gate.
